LETTERPRESS LOVE
The new BLACK SWATCH business cards arrived the other day and how excited was I! I felt like a child who had been giving the most exciting toy. As a graphic designer, I am always fascinated by texture, style and presentation of items. These cards were not an easy project. I wanted it all, black on black ink with letterpress, duplexed cards white and black, deep letterpress impression basically the works! I think when Andrew from Retro Press met me he probably wished he hadn't of been as excited by all my talk either. Andrew + Kirsten (his lovely partner) worked together with me to enable me to be happy with the result. They succeeded!
Retropress is a letterpress print studio based in the Northern Beaches of Sydney, they are eager to try new things, do amazing work and have such attention to detail. They knew I was a tough cookie and wouldn't accept anything but a high standard, and when they had attempts that were close enough, they rejected it and tried until we were all happy. How many printers would do that? Not many.
The next dilemma was that I wanted to share my cards with all my existing clients, suppliers and colleagues, but didn't think it served the cards justice to place them in a white DL envelope and ship out, so I needed to create something. I created these folders which sat nicely into a black square envelope and are my own bespoke fold which took me many goes to get it right. I designed the text to be black on black (see a theme yet? lol) but couldn't get this right either, so I photocopied the type onto the black sheets! Black toner was the only cost effect thing I could do and the results were great! I didn't want to foil these so plan B was perfect.
Would love to hear your feedback and if you think they are as cool as I do. ;) Mel x
